Analysis of a Music Video: Rihanna - Disturbia

Disturbia means contemplating or being disturbed about something, the song is about how Rihanna's mind is in Disturbia. This is obvious from the video set up, with all the dark colours, fast pace shots and flashing lights its clear the genre is related to horror in some way. The way the actors dance and flash from scene to scene make the underlying theme of the video seem evil and that there is something bad happening.

During the introductory period the camera flicks to a man who is turning a big ship like steering wheel, this gives me the impression that Rihanna is on a boat. In some scenes she appears to be tied up and help captive and in other shots she appears to be captain. This swapping or roles gives me an impression of juxtaposition, when good and bad or black and white are placed next to each other, in this case, its a prisoner and a captain.

At the start of the video Rihanna is sitting on an office like chair with dancers behind her, she looks almost superior to them, like they are her slaves. During the opening sequence, the camera flicks to a shot of Rihanna behind bars, there is a guard standing to the right hand side off the shot, it almost looks like she is being held capture under the watchful eye of a guard. Later on we see Rihanna with a rope round her wrist, she is struggling to escape, this enforces the fact that she is being held against her will.

Roughly half way through the video, the camera flashes to a scene with dancers, the shot is lit from behind, this gives the dancers an almost silhouette look about them. The dancers are dancing simultaneously to the beat of the song and almost look like zombies, to be more specific; they look like zombies from 'Michael Jackson’s' 'Thriller'.

The editing is very jumpy and cuts quickly to the next shot leaving no time for the viewer to look at characters properly and draw meaning from the video. The editing sometimes moves to the beat of the song. The lyrics match the codes and conventions of the music video, the first lyrics of the song are:

What’s wrong with me?

Why do I feel like this?

I'm going crazy now

Rihanna is asking us what’s wrong with her, why does she feel this way. Then she tells us she is going crazy now as a result of this. This is shown in the video by the scary looking dancers and the location, its always dark and looks very industrial and uninviting.

Camera movements in this video are no longer than two seconds, this is to keep in timing with the video as many shots change on the sound of the beat and to the fast pace music. The shots continue to flash on and off throughout the video. At some points in the video it is clear that some shots have been played over each other, for example, 44 seconds into the video we see Rihanna sitting on a thrown like chair, then her face appears in the left hand side of the camera. The two shots have been played over each other so you can see two clips at one time. Giving the impression that one shot is an imagination.

Short snippets of film and still images are constantly played over each other to give the impression that an actor or Rihanna is moving, when in real life it just a fast played sequence of still images and short clips. half way through the video (roughly 1 minute and 46 seconds), we see a dance scene where this technique is used to make still images look like the actors are moving/dancing.

While in this video Rihanna is playing herself in the narrative she does however perform to the camera, the camera is usually focused on her, and if not, one of her dancers. In most shots Rihanna is aware of the camera but in some she is not, and doesn't try to sing onto the camera, for example, at 3 minutes and 20 seconds into the video, we see Rihanna chained up by her hands and by her ankle, she is sitting on a chair struggling, and trying to escape. She does not notice the camera till the end of the scene, this is one of the longer scenes of video.

Close ups and medium close ups are regally used in this film to capture the emotions of the characters.

The lighting in this video is done very artistically, the scenes are mostly dark, but the scenes that are lit are usually lit from behind. Creating a silhouette like appearance on the dancers and actors. This fits in well with the mise-en-scene and creates a dark and eery look just like the rest of the video. In some shots fire is present, also enhancing the dark and evil theme.

When the scenes are lit, they are lit my long cylinder like florescent white lights. in some scenes when they are quite dark, the florescent-lights glow and emphasize the mise-en-scene.

Sound in the video is mostly non diajetic (the music) apart from the beginning and then end when there is diajetic sound. You see Rihanna run her fingers along the piano keys which makes a noise, this sound of the piano keeps playing throughout the introduction and until the music starts. The shots change on the sound of the piano, the camera flicks to a dancer who is chained up, this dancer moves to the sound of the of the piano noise. The editors have used sound very cleverly in this introduction, using the music as diajetic sound, like its not meant to be there and the characters have created it.

Task: Questions

1. How does the music video content relate to the song's subject matter and lyrics?

The video and lyrics to the song relate well together, Rihanna is talking about being 'in Disturbia', and then later on in the song she says 'release me from this curse, I’m trying to escape but I’m struggling'. In the music video during these two parts of the song, Rihanna is behind some metal bars, her eyes are fully white like she has a curse upon her; she is pulling at the bars and looks distressed. This relates back to the lyrics as she says 'release me from this curse', and 'I’m trying to escape'. This makes the lyrics more real and emphasizes the video and it meanings.

2. How do the place and atmosphere generated by the mise-en-scene and technical code relate to the musical style and vocal delivery?

The place that the video is recorded at looks very horror film like, its dark and eery scenes emphasize the atmosphere generated by the mise-en-scene and technical codes. The beats to the song are fast and exciting, true to the genre, the music video follows along with this, its fast and jumpy editing creates an unusual sense of evil, something like you would find in a horror film.

Analysis' of Music Videos

I wanted to do some extensive research on different types of music videos as this would help my group when we come to making our own music video. I gathered together some videos from different genres and analyzed them, I got several video's from different genres as it would help me to decide what the codes and conventions are for different genres.
I have analysed:
Rihanna - Disturbia
Lily Allen - LDN
Pendulum - Grantie
Empire of The Sun - We Are The Peopl
The Feeling - Never Be Lonely

The Song: 'The Sun Is Shining'

Our first decision was to decide what song we chose as this would determine everything about our coursework, our group decided to use a b-side track by the feeling called 'The sun is shining'. We decided to use this track as its never been released as a single so there isn't any copy right laws against us using it.

First we started on thinking about stereotypical music video's for a song called 'the sun is shining', we came up with the idea of a boy and a girl running through long grass with the sun shining in the background. The couple should appear to be happy and in love.

Then we started to think about underlying themes we could run with, one which was of a much deeper and darker meaning. So my group started to brainstorm, an we came up with the idea of raining city center, with gangs and knives. Something that you wouldn't expect with a song called 'The Sun Is Shining'.

We then decided that the darker music video would look good but overall decided that the 1st idea would be the better option as it was more suited to the song even though our group liked the darker themed video.

Overall the song, The Sun Is Shining' is a happy and jolly piece of pop music, but after intensely analysis the lyrics,
we decided to subvert the normal ideas that are conveyed when listening to this song with a deeper, more meaningful music video that looks at the story of the song, which actually is sad and depressing in comparison with the melody of the song.

To convey the message my group decided to split our video into two parts; the first being the present and the second being the past. To create this
we would include a grainy 60’s/70’s film effect; make the perfect mise-en-scene for that era and edit the footage to create this grainy look.

What/Who Influenced The Feeling

The Feeling have been around since 1995 but only released their first album in 2005, as The Feeling have been around for such a l ong time, their influences may have of changed from when they started out in 1995. Genre

The song my group want to design a video for (The Sun Is Shining) is part of the genre pop, pop music stands for popular music, this is music that most people like. Some bands who produce pop music are as follows; Mika, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Kelly Clarkson, The Kaiser Chiefs Etc.
Pop music developed in the 1950's as a softer alternative to rock 'n' roll, to now when it includes soft rock and R&B. Over the past few years it has become very commercial and youth orientated.

Most of the Feeling are mainly associated with this genre, some of their songs may have elements of other genres but on the whole they come under the genre pop.

Audiece Research 1

My group conducted some audience research, so when we came to doing our pre-lim task and our actual task, we would have some idea of what the potential target audience would want. This research was conducted over the internet in two ways, by sending it over social networking sites like Facebook, and the second, by e-mail.

My group decided it would be easier to hand out a questionnaire over the internet and via e-mail for its convience, there is not faffing around with bits of paper. All the work needing to be done is done very easily from a computer.

When my group came to gathering up th questionnaires and recieving answers we got together and analysed them, this way we would have an overview of every result.

Results
Q1) The dominant age group are teenagers and young adults who watch music videos - Meaning that our target audience will proberly be teenagers and young adults.
Q2) The genders were similar, however more females watch music videos - When designing our music video we have to put intio concideration that more females wtch them, so they have to be partly aimed at females, as they are the majourity of the audience.
Q3) The popular genres of music were trance, hip hop, drum 'n' bass, rock, r 'n' b, and pop being the prominant favourite - Our song is part of the pop genre, which is the mainly watched genre. So what ever we decided to do in oour music video, it will be watched as there is a high level of audiences for pop music channels.
Q4) 8/10 of the participants watch music videos - Out of the 10 participants the majourity of them watch music video's.
Q5) 7/10 of the participants watch music on TV
Q6) The most popular music channels were kiss, mtv, tmf, smash hits and the vault - All these channels focus on the mostly watched genres (trance, hip hop, drum 'n' bass, rock, r 'n' b, and pop), Which is why they are so popular because they play the mostly listened to music.
Q7) The only two reasons why the participants watch music videos is because they like the music, or for background music - So this means that people will watch the music video's if they are bored and want something to listen to, or maybe because they like watching music video's on TV.
Q8) There are many ways that the participants find out about a good music videos, the most prominant being friends, with the internet, television and magazines also being popular - Advertising is the key to a good selling song, advertising a single correctly and people will talk about it, it will be all over the internet, television and in magazines.
Q9) The music is the main thing that appeals someone to a music video, with the storyline also being popular, as well as the artist and special effects - In our music video we need to try and include some of these things that people find appealing, if pople find it apealing, they are more likely to watch it than change the channel.
Q10) 7/10 of the participants said that the artists influence them watching a music video.
Q11) The participants preferred realistic music videos, however surreal music videos were also popular as well as music videos with one narrative - This information will help us when we come to designing our own music video as we now know that our prefered target audience like realistic videos.
Q12) The present is the most favourite time setting for a music video, with the past and the future being popular - For out video, we will try to use more than one tense, this will make the video more interesting and apeall to more people because very many videos use more than one tense.
Q13) The participants equallty preferred mainly singing, performance based, random music videos - This means that it doesnt matter what kind of video we produce, it will be like what ever style we choose to do.
Q14) The favourite music videos varied from Thriller, to Wonderful world by James Morrison.
Q15) The main reasons for favouritism were that they keep them entertained, one can dance along to them, and they are simple yet effective.
Q16) Sun is Shining was described to be; catchy, good rhythm, modern, joyful, lyrical, electronic, repetative, interesting and original - Our songs positively described by 10 participant who agreed to answer our questionnaire.
Q17) The music video was said to have included; the sun, a boyfriend and girlfriend, the countryside, a band playing, a video that fits with the lyrics and isn't just selling the people in the band, but their music - When we asked participant what they thought should be included they siad the above. When we come to plannign and writing a treatment for our video we will take into consideration all of these factors.

Overall, these results have helped me narrow down what the music video should be like form the audiences point of view, however, there are other influences that need to be taken into consideration for example institutions.

Band Research: Pendulum

Pendulum are made up of Rob Swire, Gareth McGrillen, Perry Gwynedd, Paul Harding, Kodish and Verse. Pendulum are a drum and bass band who formed in 2002, since then they have released three albums. The first, 'Hold Your Colour', the second, 'In Silico' and the third, 'Live At Brixton Academy'

- 'Hold Your Colour' was Pendulum's debut album released during 2005, it sold 250,000 copies.
This album cover looks very mystical and mysterious. The use of green highlights the involvement of nature in the picture, it looks like roots and greenery are growing over someone's face. This gives the album cover a mysterious look. Making it eye catching and interesting. The colours used are very bold and iconic, especially the hint of purple, it doesn't tie in with any other colour in the cover.
The cover in general is very different and post-modern to anything that has has been released in the past, and its this that makes the cover work so successfully.

- This album cover is very different to the first, it has no relation apart form the name of the band. After this album was released all merchandise and anything by Pendulum had this logo printed on it. It soon became their house style, with their website, CD's and merchandise all contained the new logo.

http://www.pendulum.com/htm

Pendulum's web site runs along the theme as the album, its industrial looking and it has the same colour scheme. The crowd scene as the backdrop ties in and emphasizes their new album, 'LIVE At Brixton Academy', it emphasizes the 'live' factor, and how they are always doing shows, both DJ sets and performances.
Just like their 'Live At Brixton Academy' album the web site has the same diesgn, black, white and red. This makes the Pendulum logo stand out and remind us of their new album.

Pendulum are a band who focus their main goal on touring. Over recent years they have played in Australia, America, Brazil, Mexico and england. They have also done many festivals, including; Download (main stage), Reading and Leads Festival, T In The Park, Radio 1's Big Weekend, Isle Of White Festival, Oxygen and Glastonbury where they played the main stage. As well as performing live shows, Pendulum also do Dj and sets, this is when the band doesn't actually perform, their songs are played by a member of the band or a DJ.
